2m²

Choreography: Antonin Comestaz Performer: Ema Yuasa Light design: Albert Tuling Costume: Antonin Comestaz Music: Antonin Comestaz et al. World premiere: 09/09/2020 Korzo Theater The Hague / Netherlands This solo is inspired by the intriguing properties of the gömböc. A gömböc is a spherical, homogeneous object that has only one stable and one unstable equilibrium point. The gömböc is also the most stable form that exists when disturbed; it's only a matter of time before it goes back to sleep. For choreographer Antonin Comestaz, this object and its specific properties form a poetic metaphor for the human psyche - a certain duality or paradox between peace and confusion. In the recent context of self-isolation, in which many of us have experienced some degree of disorientation, Antonin, together with dancer Ema Yuasa, explores where the boundary lies between mild delirium and mental 'gömböc-like' resilience. “Gömböc” is produced by Korzo & Netherlands Dance Theater.

During the successive lockdowns, the lack of access to dance studios is often a reality. On social media, it has inspired a rise in dance content produced in small spaces. Of course, if space constraints can be somewhat problematic, the situation reminds me of what we did as kids when our parents sent us to our tiny bedroom to play: create universes, stories, and personas. With this idea in mind, I wanted to celebrate the creativity of the inner child who needs to express and break free from our present time's limitations.

“2m²” was initiated by Korzo & Created for CaDance Festival 2021

”One of CaDance's surprises is the dance film 2m² by choreographer Antonin Comestaz. He translates the feeling of being trapped, clinging to this time, into an extremely inventive solo, captured with the stop-motion film technique. A textbook example of how maddening solitude in the square meter leads to creative excesses. And with that to a joyful release.”
